MCKEVITT APPEARS IN COURT CHARGED WITH DIRECTING REAL IRA ACTIVITIES
McKevitt appears in court charged with directing Real IRA activities
A 51-YEAR-old Co Louth man charged with directing the activities of the Real IRA over a period of 14 months appeared in court in Dublin yesterday.
Michael McKevitt is accused of being a member of an unlawful organisation styling itself the Irish Republican Army between August 1999 and March 2001.
In addition, he is the first person charged under legislation introduced in the wake of the Omagh car bombing with directing the activities of an illegal organisation.
It is alleged he directed the Real IRA between August 1999 and October 2000.
McKevitt, who did not speak during the brief hearing before the judges at Dublin's non-jury Special Criminal Court, was told he would appear before the court again on June 27 and was remanded in custody.
At an earlier hearing, the court heard that FBI agent David Rupert, who successfully infiltrated the leadership of the dissident paramilitary grouping, will be the central prosecution witness against McKevitt.
If McKevitt, of Beech Park, Blackrock, Dundalk, Co Louth, is convicted of directing an unlawful organisation he faces life imprisonment.
