A FLAMENCO FOR OMAGH
A flamenco for Omagh
DAVID Johnston,Professor of Spanish and Head of Modern Languages at Queen's was moved by the motive and practical reaction of the Spanish community in Northern Ireland in helping the injured and the families of the Spanish students killed or injured in the Omagh bombing.
Now, in conjunction with the Cervantes Institute in Manchester, the cultural wing of the Spanish Embassy in Britain, David is responsible for a concert taking place in St Anne's Cathedral on February 15 at 7.30pm.
"It's to mark and note those responses, responses not just from Spanish citizens living here, but from Northern Ireland and Eire teachers and students of the Spanish language who also did so much to comfort and reassure the wounded, the relatives of the wounded, the families of those who died."
"The Cervantes Institute wanted to commemorate all that happened. They have arranged for the presence of Serranito one of the great flamenco guitarists and we will have complimentary music from Ireland, Ronnie Hannan the piper, Anne-Marie O'Farrell the harpist from Dublin, and singer Janice Kennedy from Belfast. Admission is free.
