BOMB-SCARED TOWN HONOURS TERROR VICTIMS
Bomb-scarred town honours terror victims
ALTHOUGH the Tyrone town of Omagh still bore the scars of the August bomb attack which claimed the lives of 29 civilians, the war dead were remembered in traditional fashion yesterday morning.
The parade of ex-servicemen and youth organisations stopped at the scene of the August 15 bomb attack and Royal British Legion Omagh Branch chairman Dave Given laid a poppy spray.
The normal route of the parade, which would have taken it past the bomb site, was closed as worked continued to remove the rubble left by the Real IRA car bomb attack.
Instead the parade went over Drumragh Avenue for the annual service at the College of Further Education which was well attended.
During it, Omagh Legion President Roy Maguire referred to the bombing, read the names of the victims and recited the Ode to the Fallen.
Following the service, members of the Territorial Army along with standard bearers took up positions at the Cenotaph for the traditional wreath laying ceremony which was led by Mr Maguire.
To the music of Murley Silver Band, Fivemiletown, various organisations laid wreaths, including Allan Rainey of Omagh District Council, William Thompson, MP for West Tyrone, and Oliver Gibson of the Northern Ireland Forum.
For the first time at Omagh a female member of the Northern Ireland Fire Service laid a wreath. Janet Black, accompanied by two local firemen laid the floral tribute.
She was one of those on duty at Fire Service Control in Lisburn when news of the bombing in August came through.
