BORDER BASES ON BOMB ALERT
Security forces fear attacks by maverick group

SECURITY forces in South Armagh are on red alert amid new fears maverick terrorists are about to launch a savage return to slaughter.
The News Letter has learned Army bosses believe hardline members of the Continuity, IRA are planning a major mortar bomb attack on a barracks or police station - just two months after the Omagh bombing which killed 29 people and injured over 200 others.
And security sources last night confirmed extensive intelligence gathering over the past few weeks suggests they intend to strike soon.
It is also understood that the Army has sent letters to all its barracks and police stations in the area warning of an imminent attack.
A security source told the News Letter: "The letter warns all Army and police staff to be extra vigilant over the next few weeks.
"An intelligence operation carried out has revealed that the terrorists may have already fixed up a target.
"And that they are just waiting for the right time to strike."
He also confirmed that hardline IRA members are thought to have joined forces with the Continuity IRA to plot the attack.
Many soldiers on the ground believed the recent scaling down of the security presence in the Province was foolhardy and premature.
