SOMME VISIT TO MARK END OF WAR
Somme visit to mark end of war
THE Somme Association in Northern Ireland is planning a pilgrimage to France to mark the 80th anniversary of the Armistice on November 11.
Royal British Legion officials and ex-servicemen and women from across Northern Ireland will be joined at the commemorations by representatives of the 26 district councils in the Province.
Meanwhile, the Royal British Legion in Omagh has appealed to local businesses and schools in the Co Tyrone town to observe a minute's silence on November 11, not only to remember the dead of two world wars but the 29 people who died in the August 15 bombing.
The Legion has written to Omagh District Council and support for the appeal has come from the Council's Ulster Unionist vice chairman Allan Rainey.
DUP Councillor Oliver Gibson said he felt there was a great wish to retain "the act of remembrance" in Omagh and this was especially relevant in the town this year.
