Sick hoaxers add to agony for families of blast victims
TELEPHONE tormentors have piled on more agony for the families of Omagh victims living across the border.
Garda in Donegal have set up a special team to try to find sick individuals who have been anonymously calling the families of Buncrana schoolboys who perished in the Omagh massacre. They have been asking to speak to the dead children.
Oran Doherty, Sean McLaughlin and James Barker, who had joined Spanish visitors on a day trip to the Ulster American Folk Park, were fatally wounded in the Omagh atrocity.
Garda had asked journalists to voluntarily impose a news black-out while they pursued the culprits. Days later, however, the news was publicly broken by an evening newspaper.
So far the Garda has not made anybody amenable for the hoax calls that have added to the already terrible grief of the families. Clergy and civic leaders in Buncrana have appealed for the callers to stop. On a happier note, today there will be a sponsored 50 mile run from Buncrana to Omagh to raise funds for the disaster appeal.
The organisers said yesterday that they hoped the event would be "a resounding sporting tribute to the victims of the tragedy".
About 50 athletes are expected to leave Buncrana at 8.30am accompanied by several buses. By the time they reach Omagh Leisure Centre at about 3pm their numbers may be swollen to 500 runners as they are joined en route by other fun runners and athletes. Runners will be able to enter the event at different points along the route.
The RUC yesterday asked motorists who encounter delays as the run passes through the north west today to be patient.
The Buncrana-Omagh run will cross Londonderry's Craigavon Bridge at 9.30am, pass through Strabane town centre about 11.30am and Newtownstewart shortly after 1pm.
