Call for greater security powers
THE Police Federation has called for internment to be introduced on both sides of the border in a bid to finally stamp out terrorism.
In the aftermath of the Omagh bombing, it was time for both governments to take whatever measures were necessary to support the peace, it said.
In an editorial in this month's Policebeat magazine, published by the Police Federation, it offered its condolences to the victims.
"The entire community of Omagh including its local police officers found itself united in tending to the dead, dying and maimed friends and relatives," it said.
"It is, of course, ironic that the worst atrocity of the troubles in Northern Ireland should have happened when hopes of an enduring peace were steadily rising.
"Some of the bomb attacks were thwarted but others, as at Banbridge and Portadown, managed to get through to their targets. It was obviously then only a matter of time before an explosion claimed multiple lives.'
The urgent need is for a North-South security initiative backed by political will, it said.
