Omagh bombers told to disband
The IRA has told the so-called "Real IRA" - the group responsible for the Omagh mass murder bombing - to disband within the next 14 days.
Members of the renegade organisation, mainly ex-IRA personnel opposed to the Northern Ireland peace process, have been warned by senior figures from the mainstream movement that action will be taken against them if they fail to stand down.
The message was relayed to leaders of both the Real IRA and the 32 County Sovereignty Committee, which has been linked to the Real IRA. in visits to their homes on both sides of the border by IRA representatives over a co-ordinated 80-minute period earlier this week.
The move - before a statement by Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams that violence must become a thing of the past - was confirmed yesterday by the Sovereignty Committee, which reported: "In the last 48 hours threats have been received from fellow republicans.
"This sullies the name of republicanism and we want these people to stop making threats against us."
One man who was visited at his home added: "Two men called at my door and said the Real IRA had no right to exist and accused it of misappropriating weapons.
"At other houses, members of the Sovereignty Committee were told they had no right to speak against the peace process.
"Some were simply warned that action would be taken against them if they did not make amends within a fortnight ... others were informed they would be shot."
