Ahern sends his support
AS the people of Omagh braced themselves for Sunday's memorial service and the inevitable pain of reliving the events of a year ago, there was a message of concern and support from Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern.
Pledging his government's continued commitment to defeating violence, he said it was right to remember those in Omagh, Buncrana and Spain left injured and grieving by a "terrible and utterly appalling atrocity".
"We were all united by our feelings of sorrow and grief and people everywhere on this island expressed our deepest and sincerest sympathy through words and prayers.
"Throughout this past, people the length and breadth of Ireland and in Britain have continued to demonstrate their concern and support for all those still suffering the effects of the bombing."
Similar sentiments were also expressed by Tory Party chairman and former NIO minister Michael Ancram. "One year on, the thoughts of everyone will be with the victims of the Omagh bomb, their families and their loved ones who have suffered so much.
"The terrorists sought to divide. They sought to destroy. Instead they have united the community in Omagh as never before."
