Colorado cash for Omagh fund
THE Governor of Colorado, Alan Owens, is to begin a four-day trade mission to the UK leading a delegation of Colorado business and community leaders to London and Belfast.
The people of Colorado feel a tie with the people of Omagh because of their own tragedy.
On August 15, 1998 Omagh looked like a war zone in the town centre. It was crowded with shoppers, mostly women and children buying school clothing when a car bomb exploded. Twenty-nine were killed, 380 others were treated in hospital.
On April 20, 1999 Colorado was rocked by the worst school shooting in America. Thirteen died when two students opened fire at Columbine High School. Twenty-one others were wounded.
This week Colorado's governor will help the American Ireland Fund, a non-profit organisation that funds projects in both Northern Ireland and the Republic, deliver a gift of cash.
Governor Owens will take time out from his trade mission to the United Kingdom to present a $50,000 cheque to the Omagh Fund.
"Omagh has suffered through a similar tragedy to that we suffered here with Columbine, and so I'm going to pay a symbolic visit to Omagh and also take them that cheque from the American Ireland Fund toward their rebuilding.
