Police to hold back bomb video
A SECOND amateur video of the immediate aftermath of the Omagh bombing atrocity will not be released, the RUC said yesterday.
"People need more time and distance to recover from this trauma and we don't believe it would help the process if it was to be screened," a spokesman said.
One video taken just minutes after the bomb which exploded on August 15, killing 29 and injuring 350 others, has already made public.
The second, which was recovered at the same time was taken from a different angle and according to police the footage is similar to the first tape.
The two men who abandoned the car bomb in Market Street were spotted walking away from the vehicle, and it is believed they may have been pinpointed by security cameras in the area.
RUC detectives believe they know at least six men who they suspect may have been involved in the attack which was carried out by the Real IRA, the dissident group of republicans opposed to the peace agreement but who were forced to call a ceasefire because of the public outcry.
Republicans based in Co Monaghan, Co Louth, South Armagh, Newry and possibly one in Omagh have been linked to the bombing.
Several have been questioned and although nobody has yet been charged, police on both sides of the border are fairly confident those responsible will be brought to justice and convicted.
But the second amateur video of the horror and devastation will not be released.
