BOYZONE BOOST FOR SURVIVORS
Boyzone boost for survivors
Pop stars to spend day in blast town
By STAFF REPORTER
POP heart-throbs Boyzone will play special tribute concerts in Omagh today in aid of victims of the bombing atrocity.
Members of the chart-topping band will also meet survivors of the blast during their day-long visit to the town.
The event has been welcomed as a major boost for the young people of Omagh who are still struggling to come to terms with the aftermath of the August 15 Real IRA atrocity which left 29 people dead and hundreds more injured.
Boyzone, recently voted Best Band on the Planet in a Smash Hits magazine poll, were said to be eager to do anything they could to help.
Lead singer Ronan Keating has already visited a young girl blinded in the bombing and the band's hit single Words features on the Omagh tribute album Across the Bridge of Hope.
"The boys have been saying they want to do whatever they can to help. They believe that sometimes music is the best thing to cross boundaries," said a spokeswoman for the band.
The band, whose single No Matter What has been voted record of the year, will stage two shows, a matinee and evening show at Omagh leisure centre.
Joe Byrne, an SDLP councillor in the town, said it was a massive boost.
"The young people here, including my own two daughters, are delighted that Boyzone are paying a special visit to Omagh," he said.
"They have all been through so much and everything that helps them look to the future is to be welcomed."
