A new message of joy
SCANDINAVIAN schoolchildren who pulled out of visiting Northern Ireland in the aftermath of the Omagh atrocity have sent a live Christmas message to Londonderry children vowing to come to Ulster after all.
The Finnish youngsters linked up with 60 Londonderry children when the University of Ulster lent the use of its high-tech video conferencing equipment to St Eugene's Primary School in the Maiden City.
The four schools have been taking part in a cultural exchange programme which involved a recycling project and making a compact disc.
Since the project began in September last year, teachers from Finland and Sweden have visited Londonderry and the Ulster-American Folk Park near Omagh.
Arising from the project, 60 pupils from the Finnish school, along with parents and children, had planned to visit Londonderry in September.
The Omagh outrage, which claimed the lives of a Spanish youth leader and a student who had been on an exchange trip to Buncrana, changed all that.
"The video conferencing at Magee College today has helped cheer the children up quite a bit and I think they are more keen than ever that the planned visit will go ahead."
