Candles of hope light up Omagh
THOUSANDS of people took part in a silent candlelit procession through Omagh last night in memory of the town's bomb victims.
The'Walk of Light', organised by the Omagh Churches Forum, ended with a cross-community carol service outside the town centre courthouse after passing the site of the blast, where damaged buildings have now been demolished.
Earlier, hundreds of people gathered in the bomb-ravaged town to lead the country in a celebration of Christmas.
They packed into St Columba Church of Ireland parish church in the Co Tyrone town for a cross-community service of prayer and carols.
Catholics and Protestants, among them relatives of those who died in the horrific August bombing and some of those still recovering from their injuries, attended the service.
It formed the start of the ITV's televised Christmas services and was broadcast throughout the UK.
The 29 people who were killed and the more than 200 who were injured in the car-bomb blast were remembered during the service, which took as its theme 'Light out of Darkness'.
Catholic and Protestant clergymen expressed the town's heartfelt thanks for the many messages of sympathy, books of condolence and aid, through the Omagh Fund, which had been received from around the world.
