Match proceeds for victims
MOST of the proceeds from a replayed all-Ireland hurling fixture next weekend are to be channelled to support victims of the Omagh bombing.
The move followed pressure from politicians on the Gaelic Athletic Association, controlling body of the sport, to ensure that gate receipts from the tie - a semi-final between Co Clare and Co Offaly - went to the Omagh relief fund.
The association said "a substantial proportion" of the proceeds from Saturday's game at Thurles, Co Tipperary, would be sent to the fund and stressed that the GAA did not intend to benefit at all financially from the replay.
A repeat of the tie was ordered by the GAA when the referee at the match mistakenly ended last Saturday's fixture at Dublin's Croke Park stadium nearly three minutes ahead of schedule.
Earlier yesterday Jackie Healy-Rae, an independent member of the Eire parliament, led calls on the GAA to divert receipts to Omagh.
The amount involved was not immediately clear following yesterday's decision as the GAA said tickets would be available at half the normal price because of the inconvenience and expense facing supporters of the two counties.
