Trimble in blunt message to IRA
ULSTER Unionist leader David Trimble has bluntly told Sinn Fein that the IRA must disarm now.
In a forthright message in today's News Letter, he insists this must happen if the words of condemnation by Gerry Adams after the Omagh atrocity are to mean anything.
And Mr Trimble makes it abundantly clear, in his role as First Minister designate, that there can be no place in the new Northern Ireland executive for any party which has not repudiated violence for good.
Mr Trimble and his deputy Seamus Mallon will have a meeting in Omagh today with Eire Prime Minister Bertie Ahern following a memorial service for victims of the bombing.
The UUP chief said that while nothing was guaranteed, he hoped proposed London-Dublin anti-terrorist crackdown was going to work.
Mr Trimble said the new set of institutions and the consensus in favour of the Stormont deal provided a better base for progress.
