Moves over the top, says civil rights group

THE Irish Civil Rights Association yesterday described the new anti-terrorist measures moved by the Government in the wake of the Omagh bombing atrocity as "over the top".
"At this hour, a compelling necessity does not exist to depart from our rule of law for our own citizens," the ICRA chairman, Mr Richard Greene, said. "And we should not encourage the UK to similarly depart from the rule of law for its citizens, some of whom we would wish to be ours."
"All it will take is one police blunder or excess of zeal to bring down what has been so painstakingly built up," he said.
