Sports events in minute's silence
A NUMBER of sporting events at the weekend came to a standstill as a mark of respect for the victims of the Omagh bombing. An ecumenical service was held at Croke Park before Saturday's GAA All-Ireland hurling semi-final. The GAA president, Mr Joe McDonagh, delivered a reading while children from all 32 counties read out the names of the dead.
One minute's silence at 3.10 p.m. on Saturday was also observed at the K Club where the Smurflt European Open was taking being played and in Rathmines where an international cricket match against Australia was held.
The minute's silence at a Scottish Premier League match between Glasgow Celtic and Dundee United at Parkhead was reportedly disrupted by isolated fans who shouted pro-IRA and anti-British slogans.
