PARAMILITARIES ON CEASEFIRE
Paramilitaries on ceasefire
ONLY one paramilitary organisation, the Continuity IRA (CIRA), has yet to announce a ceasefire. Other ceasefires are as follows:
UDA/UVF: On October 13th, 1994, the Combined Loyalist Military Command (CLMC), the umbrella group representing the UDA, UVF and Red Hand Commando, said it would "cease all operations". The ceasefire's permanence would depend on "the continued cessation of all nationalist/republican violence".
IRA: On July 20th, 1997, the IRA announced "a complete cessation of military operations". It said it had ordered "the unequivocal restoration" of its August, 1994 ceasefire, "reluctantly abandoned" after 17 months because of the slow progress of negotiations.
LVF: On August 8th, 1998, the Loyalist Volunteer Force declared an "absolute, utter finish" to its campaign of violence. It said: "... for LVF personnel the meaning of the word 'complete' is quite clear. The word means: entire, whole, brought to an end, perfect, absolute, utter, finished." 'Real IRA': Last Tuesday the 'Real IRA' said "all military operations have been suspended". Following the Omagh bombing, it was "embarking on a process of consultation on our future direction".
