More than 3,600 people have been killed and thousands maimed in
almost 30 years of violence
Some of the worst atrocities of the conflict include:
> 1969 - Fifteen people killed by Protestant Ulster Volunteer Force bomb in a Belfast bar
> 1972 - British troops kill 14 Catholic protesters on "Bloody Sunday" in Derry. IRA car bombs kill 11 in Belfast.
> 1974 - 21 people killed in IRA bombing of two Birmingham pubs
> 1976 - IRA assassinates British ambassador to Dublin, Christopher Ewart-Biggs
> 1979 - IRA kill British ambassador to Netherlands, Sir Richard Sykes, Conservative party spokesman on Northern Ireland, Airey Neave, and Lord Mountbatten, cousin of Queen Elizabeth
> 1982 - Irish National Liberation Army (INLA)bombs Ballykelly pub, killing 17 people
> 1983 - IRA bomb at Harrods store kills six
> 1984 - IRA bomb at Conservative party conference kills five. Margaret Thatcher escapes injury
> 1987 - Eight IRA gunmen killed in ambush by British Special Air Service Regiment soldiers. IRA bomb kills 11 at Enniskillen war memorial ceremony
> 1989 - 11 killed by IRA bomb at marine's music school in southern England
> 1991 - IRA mortar attack on 10 Downing Street. No casualties
> 1992 - IRA car bomb in City of London financial district, kills three and injures 91
> 1993 - IRA bombs Warrington and central London killing three people. Then bombs busy shopping street in Protestant part of Belfast, killing 10. Seven Catholics killed in Greysteel, Co. Derry
> 1996 - IRA bomb in London's Docklands district, kills two people and injuring 100
> 1998 - July: Three Quinn brothers killed in Ballmoney house fire
> 1998 - August 15: At least 28 people killed and 220 injured when huge bomb devastates central Omagh
