CARDINAL'S PLEA SHOULD BE HEARD
Cardinal's plea should be heard
SPEAKING at a summer school in Co Mayo at the weekend, the Catholic primate of Ireland urged those responsible for the Omagh bombing to give themselves up.
Cardinal Sean Brady made his appeal on a number of grounds, all of which make perfect sense to normal people.
"The families of those killed and the surviving victims have suffered enough. Help them to receive justice," Dr Brady said as part of a wide-ranging address at the Humbert Summer School in Ballina.
Unfortunately the likelihood that he is appealing to "normal" people seems very remote.
The Omagh bombers have evaded prosecution for 10 years.
They have had all that time to consider the fact that their actions deprived 29 people, including a woman pregnant with twins, of their lives.
They have also had all that time to realise the agony inflicted on survivors, on the relatives of survivors and on the relatives of those who died.
If none have come forward in those 10 years it is unlikely that they are going to be moved by the words of Dr Brady, no matter how sincerely or eloquently his appeal has been made.
During his speech Dr Brady also appealed for anyone with information about the bombing to give it to the police.
There are undoubtedly people in the community who have such information and perhaps it is they who may be moved by this appeal to finally break their silence.
"If you have any humanity left in your heart at all, do all that you can to ease at least a little of their pain," Dr Brady said.
What happened at Omagh 10 years ago was one of the most inhumane acts of the Troubles in Ireland.
Hopefully someone will find a little bit of humanity to bring some sense of closure, even after all these years.
