Thousands gather to mark Omagh outrage
THOUSANDS have gathered in Omagh to mark the single worst outrage of the Troubles.
Relatives of victims, members of the public and political leaders paid tribute to the 29 people and unborn twins killed when dissident republicans exploded a car bomb in the Co Tyrone town 10 years ago yesterday.
Those responsible have not been caught, with police on both sides of the border facing heavy criticism for their handling of the investigation.
Families of at least 10 of the dead boycotted the remembrance service in a row over the wording on new memorials. The memorial at the bomb site does not mention the perpetrators and text at the garden says the victims were "murdered by a dissident republican car bomb" - but the phrase is attributed to the Omagh Support and Self Help group.
During a moving ceremony marking the anniversary, rose petals were scattered on the ground of the busy shopping artery of Market Street where the car bomb devastated so many lives.
A crystal memorial obelisk and a 'Garden of Light' with a constellation of 31 mirrors symbolising the light from 31 quashed lives were unveiled.
A minute's silence was held at 3.10pm to mark the exact time of the Real IRA bomb.
In Dublin around 800 people attended a Mass at the Pro Cathedral to remember the victims. During the service, two 10-year-old children read out the names of each of the bomb victims.
