SOME facts about the Omagh trial that you may have missed: when the PSNI sent its case file to the Public Prosecution Service last year, it recorded 29 murders as "cleared" in its crime statistics; when the Public Prosecution Service received that file, it decided to proceed with a case that was clearly hopeless; Mr Justice Weir took a full year to write his 23-page verdict, averaging under two pages a month; and that verdict was delivered on the last full working day of the legal year, just before a two-week break in the usual news cycle.
