Omagh trial verdict likely after summer
DECISION in the Omagh bomb trial may not come until September, it was claimed last night. The trial of 37-year-old south Armagh electrician Sean Hoey ended in January with trial judge Mr Justice Weir admitting that he had an extensive amount of evidence to consider in the case.
Mr Justice Weir said he would give his verdict in the case as soon as possible. However, legal sources last night suggested that the judgment might not now be delivered until after the summer recess in September. Hoey, who is the longest-serving remand prisoner in Northern Ireland, having already served three and a half years in jail, denies a total of 56 charges, including 29 counts of murder as a result of the 1998 Omagh bombing.
