Designs invited for new Omagh memorial

DESIGNS are being invited for a new memorial to the 29 people and unborn twins killed in the 1998 Real IRA bomb attack on Omagh.
A working group was set up earlier this year to come up with a permanent tribute to the victims in time for the 10th anniversary of the atrocity on August 15 next year.
It includes representatives of the British, Irish and Spanish governments to reflect the backgrounds of all of those killed.
The working group this week launched a �240,000 public art competition to appoint a design team for the memorial.
Teams will be asked to submit proposals for a design to link the bomb site to a temporary memorial garden located at Drumragh Avenue for the last nine years.
At least �100,000 from the budget has been set aside for a piece of public art to be incorporated in the final memorial.
Full details of the competition can be obtained from Omagh District Council, with entries to be submitted by May 25.
