Omagh bomb trial adjourned again
HE trial of south Armagh man Sean Hoey for the Omagh bomb murders has been adjourned for another week, to begin on Monday September 25. However, trial judge Mr Justice Weir said yesterday he wanted to be told immediately if an illness affecting defence barrister Orlando Pownall meant the new date would also not be met, as he was not prepared to allow the case to drift in and out of the court lists. Mr Hoey (36), an electrician from Molly Road, Jonesborough, denies a total of 58 charges including the murders of 29 people in Omagh in August 1998, including a mother of unborn twins.
A junior defence lawyer told Belfast Crown Court that Mr Pownall has been diagnosed with a viral infection and been prescribed medication, but doctors are "optimistic" that if given a further 10 days.
