JUDGEMENT DUE IN MCKEVITT RIRA CASE
Judgment due in McKevitt RIRA case
DUBLIN'S Court of Criminal Appeal is expected to give its judgment today in an appeal by Michael McKevitt against his conviction for directing the Real IRA. McKevitt (54), pictured, of Beech Park, Blackrock, Co Louth, was jailed for 20 years in August 2003 for directing the activities of a terrorist organisation between August 29 1999 and October 23 2000. He was the first person to be convicted in the Republic for the offence, which was introduced after 1998 Omagh bomb which killed 29 people including a woman pregnant with twins.
The time period for which McKevitt was convicted of directing the organisation is after the Real IRA bomb attack.
McKevitt also received a six-year concurrent prison sentence for membership of an illegal organisation, which the Special Criminal Court said was the Real IRA. His four-day appeal last month centred on the issues concerning the reliability of the chief prosecution witness in the trial - FBI agent and 'supergrass' David Rupert - who infiltrated the Real IRA and attended its 'army council' meetings where he said McKevitt was present.
