MAN IN COURT ACCUSED OF OMAGH BOMB CAR SUPPLY
Man in court accused of Omagh bomb car supply
A 34-YEAR-OLD Co Louth unemployed labourer appeared before Enniskillen Magistrates Court accused of supplying the car used by the Real IRA to bomb the heart out of Omagh seven years ago.
Short-haired and moustached Anthony Joseph Donegan, right, whose address was given as Afton Drive, Dundalk, replied "No," when the charge that he had supplied a maroon Vauxhall Cavalier car, with a Co Donegal registration, 91 DL 2554 to a person unknown between August 11 and 16, 1998, knowing or suspecting it would be used in connection with an act of terrorism.
During the short three minute hearing, Donegan, left, flanked by Maybin security staff, a jumper slung over his shoulders, was told by RM Liam McNally that he would be remanded into custody until March 8 next to appear via video link at Omagh Magistrates Court.
However, Mr McNally told Donegan, awarded legal aid "at the moment given the gravity of the charge," if he was later granted High Court bail, he was to attend the Omagh court in person.
Earlier a detective sergeant told the court that he had charged Donegan in Omagh police station at 7.26 am yesterday and that he replied "not guilty."
Donegan was initially arrested on Sunday evening by traffic branch who took him to Newry police station on discovering he was wanted in connection with the Omagh bombing, the single worst atrocity in Northern Ireland.
He was questioned for two days before being taken from Newry to Omagh to be charged and then to appear in Enniskillen to be formally charged and remanded into custody.
