Demand for 'quality control'
POLICE leaders have demanded a watchdog be established to protect officers from ombudsman Nuala O'Loan.
The Police Superintendents' Association of Northern Ireland claimed a formal redress to her findings was now vital.
Association President Bill Lowry declared: "There needs to be some sort of quality control."
With Mrs O'Loan standing by her scathing report into how the hunt for the Real IRA gang behind the August 1998 attack was conducted, Mr Lowry warned confidence in her was fast evaporating.
"If this is an indication of the standard of her investigations that it doesn't give much confidence," he said.
Meanwhile Victor Barker, who lost his 12-year-old son James in the outrage, called into question Mrs O'Loan's motives.
The Surrey-based lawyer said: "I want to support the investigation, I don't want it to fall to pieces."
"But I'm not in favour of this being used as a political football between two parties."
