Golfing boost to Omagh appeal

THE OMAGH appeal fund is set to receive a further £I00,000 this weekend when golfers from around Ireland take part in the Omagh Appeal Fund Golf Classic.
A total of 72 golf clubs will be represented at Omagh Golf Club today, for an event devised by Newry men Eamon O'Hagan, Jim McKay, Sean Monaghan and Michael Savage.
"It was a very simple idea. We all felt helpless after what happened at Omagh and as we all played golf, we thought we would try and encourage
clubs throughout Northern Ireland to raise funds and co-ordinate their efforts through a major golf competition," said Mr O'Hagan.
"We all got together and contacted the clubs and potential sponsors - with the blessing of Omagh Golf Club. The whole thing has just snowballed ever since.
"The response has just been incredible, and if everything goes to plan, we should go through the £I00,000 mark."
Due to the large number of clubs wishing to contribute, the organisers decided to extend the event over both today and tomorrow. Omagh Golf Club teeing off proceeds this mornings at 8.30am.
