TWO QUESTIONED ON PASSPORT OFFENCES
Two questioned on passport offences
DETECTIVES were yesterday questioning a Garda sergeant and a retired colleague about alleged passport offences.
Both men live in Co Louth. The retired officer is in his early 60s, and the sergeant, who is currently suspended, is 38.
Under the terms of the Republic's passport regulations, applicants need forms that have been signed by police officers in their presence.
The two arrests were thought to be connected to the illicit issuing of passports to criminals and people who could be linked to terrorism.
Irregularities are understood to have come to light following intensive police activity around the border following last month's Real IRA bomb attack in Omagh, when 29 people were killed and more than 200 injured.
