OMAGH FUND IS WORTHY GESTURE

Omagh Fund is worthy gesture

MONEY alone cannot compensate those who were injured or lost relatives in the Omagh massacre.
Their lives will never be the same again, regardless of the payment they eventually receive.
At the same time, it is essential that no one should suffer financial hardship, as well as emotional trauma, in the wake of the atrocity.
The Omagh Fund, which was officially launched yesterday, has a crucial role to play in this process.
Officials say they are hoping to raise at least £5 million, although up to £12 million may be needed to cover all the contributions which could be required.
The sheer scale of the carnage six weeks ago remains appalling. In addition to the 29 deaths, 370 people needed hospital treatment and 2,000 more had to visit their doctors.
It can be expected that the entire community will respond to the appeal fund with immense generosity, and will also support the many special events which are planned in the coming months.
Huge donations from major organisations will swell the overall total, but small gifts from family groups and individuals will be just as gratefully received by the organisers.
Everyone has a part to play in ensuring that the Omagh Fund succeeds in achieving all its commendable aims.
