PAPER PRAISES IRELAND'S FRIENDS
Papers praise 'Ireland's friends'

THE British and Irish press yesterday heralded President Clinton's visit to Northern Ireland as a success.
The Irish Star described Mr Clinton and his wife Hillary as "great friends to this island".
The Times said the president "handled himself with considerable dignity and struck the right balance for the occasion".
The Irish Times said Mr Clinton was clearly committed to Ireland. Its editorial said: "His involvement and commitment ... seem certain to copper-fasten the Irish-American relationship, giving it an importance that can be expected to last well into the next century and making this country the envy of many other larger ones for the access it enjoys in the US."
The Mirror praised him for meeting victims of the Omagh massacre in private, saying "The president could not be accused of publicity-seeking either. His meeting with victims and the bereaved was private and he was clearly moved by what he saw and heard." But The Sun's editorial called on President Clinton to give a public pledge that he will "ban Americans from sending dollars to terrorists".
