OMAGH BOMBERS ARE NOT REPUBLICANS
Omagh bombers are not republicans
THE awful slaughter of the innocent at Omagh - children from home and abroad; babes in arms and the yet unborn - this bloody murder of their mothers and their grandmothers was, we are led to believe, done in the name of res publica - the good state.
Indeed, we are to led to believe that it was done in the name of republican virtue - that philosophy of good government of, by and for our citizens towards the good of all and in the expression of the general will.
What a travesty! What hypocrisy! What blasphemy!
This most evil atrocity was specifically aimed at destroying that very general will. It was cynically and clinically directed against our agreement, its democracy and its intended peace.
The intention of these pseudo-republicans is to create confusion, suspicion and distrust. It is to destabilise our situation by stirring up sectarian reaction, hatred and violence among our people and thus to discredit, weaken and ultimately destroy our hard-won though as yet incipient democracy. Some unionists have a tendency to fall into such a trap. I appeal to them not to react in the way this monstrous evil calculated that they would. And I appeal to nationalists and republicans to continue to work patiently and positively with their unionist neighbours in the cause of peace and democracy.
