SDLP to decide stance on justice bill
THE SDLP will today decide its stance on the Criminal Justice (Terrorism and Conspiracy) Bill amid growing concerns that a lot of safeguards are needed to stop human rights abuses.
One of the bill's most controversial provisions is that it will enable someone to be convicted of belonging to a banned group largely on the evidence of a senior police officer backed by only by limited supporting evidence.
SDLP chief whip Eddie McGrady said yesterday said that he had seen a draft of the bill but would wait to hear the verbal presentation in parliament.
He said that the bill contained a very dramatic departure from the normal law prevailing in any democracy and because of this it was essential that there should be all necessary safeguards.
