Call for politicians to 'redouble efforts'

THE president of the Methodist Church in Ireland has called on politicians and community leaders throughout Ireland to "redouble their efforts" to make the peace agreement work.
Speaking yesterday at a Baptismal Service in Grosvenor House, Reverend David Kerr urged all those who voted no to "think again and to share with the yes vote in making this agreement work for the good of us all".
He thanked Sinn Fein for their "clear condemnation of this vile act" and said he understood "something of your task in seeking to bring hard liners along with you on the road of peace".
But he also urged the republican leadership "to find some way of moving forward on the decommissioning of weapons that will give reassurance" to the Unionist community.
Rev Kerr who conducted the funeral service for one of the Omagh dead, Julia Hughes told the 32 County Sovereignty Committee and the Real IRA to "get real".
He added: "If you love Ireland and its peoples then love them as they are Particularly learn to accept Northern Ireland as it is both in its Britishness and in its Irishness for this is the reality upon which a new Ireland will be build."
During his sermon he applauded David Trimble and Seamus Mallon for their 'courageous leadership over this sad summer period...while yet being true to their own traditions and differing aspirations
Rev Kerr described Saturday's act of rejection in Omagh a "solemn and moving occasion" and the community's first step to reclaim their town".
