Ahern warns youth against 'godfathers'
TAOISEACH Bertie Ahern last night urged young people to avoid all involvement with terrorism.
Mr Ahern underlined the plea in Co Mayo, where he was attending a 1798 commemoration.
The Dublin premier, who last week unveiled a tough new anti-terrorist package -drafted in response to the Omagh outrage - declared: "The days of the physical force tradition are long past us. I would like to think they were from another generation.
"There are those who harbour another view, but they are wrong. What they must see is that there is a new political dispensation, a new political agreement.
"The people have given their verdict on that and, even in this tragic week, the people have said 'make this agreement work'."
Mr Ahern, who warned of the possibility of further terror strikes, added: "When anyone gets caught up in that, it only ruins their life.
"There are people who have served long, long prison sentences because they have listened to these godfathers, who are only there to misguide them for their own selfish deeds."
Mr Ahern repeated an appeal for information about the Omagh bombers: "We should never again have to live through the horror and evil of the past week."
