Buncrana council calls for action over attack

BUNCRANA urban district council last night condemned those responsible for the Omagh bomb which killed three local boys and their Spanish friends.
The council held a special meeting yesterday to convey their "deepest sympathy" to the families and victims of the Omagh bombing.
Town Clerk Paul Doyle said the councillors wished to express their support for "all those who were bereaved and those who suffered injury as a result of the horrific bomb blast".
The council unanimously passed a resolution "condemning those who perpetrated such a dastardly indiscriminate act".
It called on the Irish government to take whatever action is necessary to ensure that "such discriminate killing cannot recur".
Councillors in Buncrana also expressed their appreciation of the emergency and medical services in Omagh as well as the Gardai and RUC for the "respectful and dignified manner in which they escorted the cortege from the mortuary in Omagh to Buncrana".
"The members were touched by the incredible expression of support during the removal of the remains when thousands of people stood in candlelight vigil along the route," said Mr Doyle.
The UDC renewed its resolve to continue to work with its colleagues across the border in promoting the common interest of peace and harmony in the north-west.
"They felt this to be the greatest tribute which could be paid to the memory of all those who had died and to those who were injured in this tragic event," said the town clerk.
UNISON members from the emergency and caring services laid wreaths yesterday at the Irish Congress of Trade Unions' ceremony in Omagh.
The union said the members represented all of those who had "worked so tirelessly, selflessly and courageously" over the past few days.
Unison spokeswoman Inez McCormack said: "We honoured not only those who died, but those who by their courage, warmth and determination have affirmed the humanity of all of us.
"In Omagh we have ordinary people who are in an extraordinary and appalling situation. Their quiet courtesy, their warmth and support for each other, together with their determination not to let their community be divided, is an example to us all."
