DETERMINED PEOPLE PRAISED FOR GIFT OF PEACE
Determined people praised for 'gift of peace'
PRESIDENT Bill Clinton last night praised the people of the North for the gift of peace they had given the world and said their determination to find a better way was an inspiration to all.
"Your work is the world's work" he told thousands of cheering people in Armagh at the end of his 12-hour visit and just prior to his departure to the 26 counties. And he added: "Everywhere in every corner of the world there are people who want to be able to say for the rest of their lives in the face of any act of madness born of hatred over religious or racial or ethnic or tribal differences - they want to shake their fists in defiance and say 'don't tell me it has to be this way - look at Northern Ireland'," Mr Clinton said. In the most passionate and emotional speech during the long and exhausting day of engagements Mr Clinton said the North had put centuries of division to bed and had created a new dawn.
"You will be tested again and again but the god of grace has given you a new beginning and you must make the most of it" he added. Mr Clinton spoke movingly of his visit to Armagh earlier in the day where he met survivors and relatives of the Omagh bombing victims.
He condemned what he called the madness of those who believed they could destroy peace by killing enough people.
