Guns seized as seven quizzed on continuity IRA

TWO guns have been recovered by Gardai in raids on the homes of suspected members of the Continuity IRA, the only republican terrorist organisation that has not yet declared a ceasefire.
Seven men were being quizzed by detectives last night about the activities of the breakaway terror group. They were being held in Dublin under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.
In swoops on houses on the north side of the capital, the north inner city and Leixlip, Co Kildare, Gardai recovered a rifle and a handgun in a house in Donaghamede.
Pressure has been mounting on the Continuity IRA to declare a ceasefire after the Real IRA's decision to call off its murder campaign in the wake of the Omagh atrocity.
Most of the CIRA activists along the border switched over to the Real IRA earlier this year but since the ceasefire there have been concerns that the group may resume terrorist operations shortly.
Senior Garda officers are particularly concerned that the organisation appears to be attempting to recruit young men and women who had been active previously in Sinn Fein - a tactic deployed in the past 10 months by the Real IRA.
Meanwhile, seven members of one family were being held for questioning by the Garda team investigating the theft of the Vauxhall Cavalier car used in the Omagh bombing last month.
The seven, who live between Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, and Culloville in south Armagh, were detained yesterday and Monday. Gardai went to court last night for permission to extend the periods of detention for some of the suspects under the new anti-terrorist laws.
They are being questioned about the theft of the car in Carrickmacross two days before the bombing and its subsequent storage across the border.
The RUC are continuing to question six others detained in south Armagh in a co-ordinated cross-border operation on Monday morning.
