Republicanism like Dracula'
EVEN the Omagh atrocity had not succeeded in killing violent republicanism, said Fine Gael back bencher, Brendan McGahon.
"Violent republicanism is not dead, it is like Dracula it would need a stake driven through its heart to end it," he told the Dail.
Mr McGahon said for the last 30 years there had been an appeasement of terror.
"There is no other way to look at it, and politicians are jumping on the bandwagon following the horrific events in Omagh, but why wasn't legislation brought in after Enniskillen, after Warrenpoint and the other horrific atrocities?" he asked.
He said he indicted all governments, his own included, for going soft on terrorism, for looking over their shoulders for the last 30 years wondering if things were politically correct.
Mr McGahon said he himself wasn't politically correct and had unambiguously opposed the IRA, sometimes under threat to his own life.
He added: "These measures show how much out of control this country has been for 30 years."
