Real IRA' must face force of law
ALL the words of condemnation of the Omagh bomb will ring hollow unless the most powerful force of law is unleashed against the perpetrators, sympathisers and fellow travellers of the self-styled murderous Real IRA and their ilk, Tanaiste Mary Harney said yesterday.
The bombing, she said, was the work of a tiny perverted minority who rejected the Good Friday Agreement.
"Second only to the grotesque, immediate and continuing human misery caused, the cruelest aspect of the bombing was that it eclipsed the hope that flowed from the agreement and threatened a return to the abyss of the previous 30 years," she said.
The Good Friday Agreement, its subsequent endorsement by referendum both North and South was an extraordinary effort for peace, the Tanaiste said.
The Tanaiste described the bombers as crazed deluded people full of perverted arrogance which allowed them to perpetrate murder without compunction.
The Government, she said, had a clear duty to take extraordinary measures in the face of an extraordinary threat to life itself and to the peace process which the people had so recently endorsed.
Referring to the statement from Sinn Fein president Gerry Adams as being "highly significant", the Tanaiste said that the attitude and intent demonstrated by Mr Adam's statement opened up new possibilities for dialogue and political progress.
