GAA REPLAY CASH SHOULD GO TO OMAGH
GAA urged to give replay cash to Omagh
THE GAA could make up to 200,000 for every minute missed in the All-Ireland Hurling Semi-Final replay. But not if Jackie Healy-Rae has his way.
The independent TD from Kerry wants the cash from the next game to go to the Omagh bomb victims' fund.
The association said yesterday Clare and Offaly must meet for a third time next Saturday at Semple Stadium, Thurles. The first replay ended controversially when referee Jimmy Cooney blew for full time with almost three minutes left to play. At normal prices, the next game would turn in an estimated 700,000, almost a quarter of a million pounds for each of the three minutes missed. However, the GAA has recommended that ticket prices should be reduced and President Joe McDonagh said there will be some reduction.
Deputy Healy-Rae says the GAA has made enough money from the Clare-Offaly clash and asked them to "make a gesture" to the people of Omagh. Said Mr McDonagh: "We will be setting in place a fund that will be administered by the Northern Ireland Sports Council.''
