CHURCH SERVICE REMEMBERS VICTIMS
Church services remember victims

BELFAST'S Lord Mayor yesterday called on people in the city to support the 'Acts of Reflection' organised by the four main churches. He said citizens will be able to express "their sympathy and solidarity with the people of Omagh and join with people all over the island of Ireland in observing a minute's silence at 3.10pm."
Councillor David Alderdice will attend the Acts of Reflection in St Peter's Cathedral on the Falls Road while a number of events will simultaneously take place across the city, country and other countries.
St Anne's Church of Ireland Cathedral will hold a service at 3pm though a spokesperson said the church gates will be open from 9am onwards to allow people meditate in silence.
Monsignor Tom Toner of St Peter's Catholic Cathedral will officiate at a service at 3pm. He said "We will toll our funeral bell at 3.10pm and between each toll we will read the name of one of the victims. We want to try and reflect the mood of the people where words have failed - I think we need such symbolic gestures."
The Catholic Primate of all-Ireland Archbishop Sean Brady, the Church of Ireland Archbishop Dr Robin Eames, the Presbyterian Moderator Dr John Dixon and the Methodist President the Rev David Kerr will attend the central service in Omagh at which politicians of all persuasions from North and South are expected to gather.
The events have been jointly arranged by a group of interdenominational local clergy.
Omagh event co-ordinator the Rev Robert Herron said; "We've got to take a step forward to come together again in terms of healing and even reclaiming our own town. We're looking for words of comfort
