High-tech crackdown on Omagh bombers

SOPHISTICATED new surveillance equipment is being purchased overseas for the Gardai to mount a more elaborate watch on the godfathers of terror. The high-tech monitoring gear is part of a range of equipment approved by the Government in its package of measures to clamp down on the killers of Omagh. The multi-million pound package was given the go-ahead at Wednesday's four-hour Cabinet meeting.
Details were not announced afterwards as the Government is awaiting a review of cross-border policing by Garda Commissioner Pat Byrne and RUC Chief Constable Ronnie Flanagan.
However, it was learned last night that the operational package will focus on five key areas:
o Up-to-the-minute equipment to allow gardai to spy on suspects whatever their location;
o A computer programme allowing images of suspects taken from the garda helicopter to be transmitted to garda cars and jeeps;
o Eighteen new all weather terrain four-wheel drive jeeps for use against the terrorists;
o Twenty additional marked and unmarked patrol cars for the emergency response and national surveillance units;
o A big increase in garda overtime facilitate additional work in the Border divisions, particularly Louth-Meath and Cavan-Monaghan the recent bomb interceptions have been.
