Support for peace recalled in homily

THE support for the Good Friday agreement has allowed the state to take "exceptional measures of severity" to reach peace, according to the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Desmond Connell In his homily at Mass in the Pro-Cathedral in Dublin today, the Archbishop is to say that, the overwhelming support for the referendum proposals was heartening
"This support gives the necessary democratic mandate for civil authorities to take exceptional measures of severity in response to the demand for peace." He says Archbishop Connell adds that such measures will be wisely drafted so they will have "no wider application, than is strictly necessary to safeguard the peace at this time."
"This will provide the new strength we require to put an end to the misery that has lasted too long. May what we witnessed these days be never again repeated".
He says the decision of the electorate has nothing to do with the way we should judge the Omagh bombing but it means civil authorities are stronger in their ability to confront it. He adds that while prayers are being offered for those who have suffered, prayers must also be there for those working for peace.
Archbishop Connell highlights the contrast between those responsible for the atrocity and those who went to the help of the injured and dying.
