CEASEFIRE EXPECTED FROM THE INLA THIS WEEKEND
Ceasefire expected from the INLA this weekend

THE INLA is on the brink total ceasefire as early as this weekend it emerged.
A spokesperson for the for the Irish Republican Socialist Party (IRSP), the political wing of the INLA, said he was unaware of the timing of such a hoped-for statement, but urged the group to reach a decision quickly. He said his party recogised that the political eliminate in the country had unchanged and people want to explore the way forward peacefully.
Spokesperson Willie Gallagher said that in the light of the overwhelming support for the Belfast Agreement and the Stormont elections the IRSP had been in consultations with a wide group of people and organisations. We now accept that in the light of the referendum and the clearly expressed wishes of the people of the island that there is now no basis for the continuation of armed struggle by Irish republicans.
In the light of the result the IRSP are pledged to continue to strive towards our goal of a socialist republic by internationally recognised political activity.
"We also call on all groups to accept that there is now no basis for armed struggle and to desist now".
The IRSP's Paul Little said that late last week the party met INLA inmates in the Maze, and that he is confident an announcement will be made soon.
