TRIMBLE DEMANDS RECALL TO PARLIAMENT FOLLOWING DAIL MOVE
Trimble demands recall to parliament following Dail move
CALLS were made yesterday for both the British government to recall parliament and the new North Assembly to reconvene at Stormont in response to the Taoiseach's decision to summon back the Oireachtas in early September.
North First Minister David Trimble in a letter to the British Prime Minister asked him to be seen to act "as decisively as the Government in the Irish Republic" by recalling parliament to match the south's security package.
The Ulster Unionist Party leader warned that the British should be no less forceful with their response. The Taoiseach is recalling the Irish parliament within two weeks to effect amending legislation that, will significantly strengthen the ability of his authorities to counter the threat posed by the dissident terrorists.
Mr Trimble said that while he publicly welcomed the determination of Mr Ahern's measures, he also backed proposed changes which would facilitate the imprisonment of terrorist suspects.
In addition, he said, he was also convinced of the necessity of reinstating the power of internment as an option.
You will agree, I am sure, that we must look at all costs avoid the potential situation of known terrorist from the Republic of Ireland fleeing to Northern Ireland for sanctuary from the republics new measures.
