Spanish victims families will claim damages
FAMILIES of Spaniards killed or injured in the Omagh bomb attack will be due full compensation payments, announced the British Embassy in Madrid yesterday. Under British regulations, innocent victims of the violence in the North shall receive indemnity payment regardless of their nationality. Two Spaniards, Fernando Blasco Baselga (12) and teacher, Rocio Abad Ramos (23), were among 28 people killed in the bomb blast and 12 young Spanish were among over 300 injured.
The Spanish victims were the first foreigners killed in three decades of violence in the North.
Later in the day, representatives of the Spanish royal family and Irish and British politicians including Tanaiste Mary Harney joined relatives of Blasco Baselga and Abad Ramos for a memorial service in Madrid.
Their funerals were held on Tuesday.
Last night Ms Harney said: "It is tragic to think these young people, who had come to Ireland to enjoy themselves, and to learn, Should suffer in this way. For many Irish people, their arrival heralds the start of summer. It is unbelievably sad to sec how their trip ended."
