Spaniards unaware of friends' death
THE two Spanish exchange students recovering to hospital in Derry after Saturday's bomb blast, were last night unaware that two of their friends were killed in the explosion.
Gonzalo Blanco and Esteban Helguero, both from Madrid and both aged 13, were two of the party of 33 Spanish exchange students staying in Buncrana and both were caught up in the blast. Both are being treated for broken legs and lacerations
Their party leader, Rocia Abad Ramos (29) and student Fernanda Brasco Bacelga. (12), also from Madrid, are among the 28 who died in the explosion.
The two Madrid teenagers were visited in hospital yesterday by the Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, Francisco Alvares Cascos.
Speaking to reporters after his visit, MR Cascos said the two boys realised that they bad been caught to a trap.
Mr Cascos also said the thousands of Spanish students who visit Ireland on educational and cultural trips every year would not be deterred by the horrific events that hit one such group in Omagh on Saturday.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern yesterday wrote to Spanish PM Maria Azaar expressing heartfelt condolences at the deaths of the Spanish teacher and student killed in Omagh. His thoughts were with the families of the affected Spanish citizens.
